KUALA LUMPUR – Bowling has long been a sport that Malaysians can count on for top honours, consistently delivering results on the world stage.

From grassroots development to the efficient management of officials, bowling has excelled at every level in the country.

However, it remains a significant drawback that it is not an Olympic sport, limiting the support and funding that the government and the National Sports Council (NSC) can provide.

The 2024 Malaysia Games (Sukma) in Sarawak recently concluded to widespread acclaim, with some even comparing it favourably to the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Bowling was among the standout sports, drawing high praise – particularly from the Malaysian Tenpin Bowling Congress (MTBC).

The event not only featured world-class hosting but also showcased many promising young bowlers.

“I personally believe that Sarawak can outperform many others in hosting major events, as demonstrated at this Sukma,” MTBC secretary-general Maradona Chok told Scoop.

“The 2027 SEA Games, which is technically smaller for most sports, should be easy for Sarawak to host.

“If we look at bowling, their centre Megalanes Sarawak is of world-class standard. In fact, we are hosting the 2026 IBF World Youth there, with an expected participation of around 35 to 40 countries.

“With 42 lanes, we foresee no issues for Sarawak to host such an event. They are definitely ready.”

Maradona also highlighted that 22 out of the 33 medallists at Sukma are already part of the national programme, while the remaining 11 represent their respective states.

He singled out 21-year-old Nur Hazirah Ramli, who secured four gold medals for Sarawak, as a talent to watch.

“Hazirah is a member of the National Youth team and most recently won gold in the team event at the World Youth. She is undoubtedly a promising prospect for the future,” added Maradona. – August 27, 2024
