KUALA LUMPUR – The Federal Territories minister will conduct a re-mapping of the capital city to ensure public safety, following the sinkhole incident on Jalan Masjid India yesterday which swallowed an Indian tourist who is still missing.
Dr Zaliha Mustafa said the mapping exercise will provide detailed information on how the sinkhole occurred and ensure that the area and other parts of the city are safe.
“We will get input on the mapping from geological experts
“Then we will know what our next efforts should be to ensure that this area and around Kuala Lumpur is safe (for the public),” Zaliha told the media after inspecting the site of the sinkhole at Jalan Masjid India, here, this afternoon.
She spent about 20 minutes listening to updates and explanations from search-and-rescue personnel.
The operation to look for an Indian national, known as Vijayaletchumy, 48, is still ongoing after the pavement she was walking on outside Malayan Mansion on Jalan Masjid India opened up and swallowed her at around 8.20am yesterday.
Search-and-rescue personnel could not find her in the 8m-deep hole and believe she had been swept away by strong water flow in the sewerage system.
Zaliha, meanwhile, said the ministry is awaiting a full report on the sinkhole incident after the SAR operation is completed.
“I have not received the full report yet so we are waiting for responsible parties to know the cause (of the incident).” – August 24, 2024
