KUALA LUMPUR – Following several scorching days, the Meteorological Department has issued thunderstorm warnings for multiple states this evening.

In a recent Facebook update, the department announced that thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and strong winds are expected in the East Coast states of Kelantan, Terengganu, and Pahang, as well as in Perak, Negeri Sembilan, and Johor.

Warnings have also been issued for the Borneo states of Sabah and Sarawak.

MetMalaysia explained that warnings are issued when signs of a thunderstorm with rainfall intensity exceeding 20mm per hour are observed or expected to persist for over an hour. A thunderstorm warning is considered a short-term alert and is valid for up to six hours.

In Perak, rain is expected in Kerian, Larut, Matang Dan Selama, Hulu Perak, and Kuala Kangsar. In Kelantan, places likely affected include Tumpat, Kota Bharu, Jeli, Bachok, and Pasir Puteh.

Terengganu will see thunderstorms in Besut, Setiu, Kuala Nerus, Hulu Terengganu, Kuala Terengganu, Marang, and Dungun.

In Pahang, Cameron Highland, Lipis, Raub, Bentong, Temerloh, Bera, and Rompin will see heavy rain. The areas affected in Negeri Sembilan are Jelebu and Jempol, and finally, in Johor, Segamat.

Over in Sarawak, Kuching, Serian, Samarahan, Sri Aman, Betong, Sarikei, and Miri are to be affected, and in Sabah, only Keningau and Tawau (Semporna) were issued the warning.

Users reacted to the post with relief as the hot weather finally relented.

Another user, Mimie Remy, confirmed the warning, saying “Now it is raining heavily in Kuching. Grateful.” – July 30, 2024
