WASHINGTON – US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Inspector-General Joseph Cuffari has opened an investigation into the Secret Service’s process for securing Donald Trump’s campaign event in Pennsylvania where the ex-US president was shot, reported Sputnik.

On Saturday, a 20-year-old man tried to assassinate Trump at a campaign rally but the bullet from the gunman’s AR assault rifle grazed Trump’s right ear instead.

US Secret Service agents killed the gunman moments after he was able to fire several rounds toward the stage, killing one spectator and critically injuring two others.

The FBI continues to investigate the shooting, but the suspect’s motive remains unknown, according to US law enforcement.

Fox News reported yesterday that Cuffari, appointed as the inspector-general by then-president Trump in 2019, has opened the investigation.

The broadcaster cited the Office of the Inspector-General’s website as saying that the goal of the investigation is to “evaluate the United States Secret Service’s process for securing former President Trump’s July 13, 2024 campaign event,” while the probe itself is categorised as counter-terrorism and homeland threats. – July 17, 2024
