Deputy speaker files report over alleged slander, negative depiction of Orang Asli by TikToker

Datuk Ramli Mohd Nor claims social media users insulted him by accusing him of abandoning indigenous community’s interests for bribes

KUALA LUMPUR – Deputy Dewan Rakyat Speaker Datuk Ramli Mohd Nor (Cameron Highlands-BN) has filed a police report against a TikTok user for allegedly slandering the Umno MP in a series of videos.

Addressing a press conference in Parliament today, Ramli claimed the TikTok user by the name of @apong606 had personally insulted him, jeopardised public peace, and presented a negative perception of the Orang Asli community.

According to Ramli, the user in question had accused him of abandoning the interests of the indigenous community after receiving bribes by saying: “YB Ramli dah makan dedak, makan taik, dia nak musnahkan Orang Asli, bukan dia nak bela Orang Asli.”

The sole Orang Asli parliamentarian said the posts were linked to engagement sessions he had undertaken to collect insight on potential amendments to the Federal Constitution regarding the interests of the Orang Asli community.

“I’ve been made to understand that there are some individuals and groups who do not agree with my views (on the necessity to amend the constitution). If it were up to them, the constitution would not be amended at all.

“To me, I have no intentions to shut anyone up, but there are legal guidelines (on online interactions)…I’m not opposing anyone with differing views, but don’t insult me and incite the public in such a way,” Ramli said.

His police report, filed at the Sentul police headquarters today, was made under the Penal Code provisions, namely Section 504 for intentional insult leading to a breach of public peace, Section 505(c) on incitement against a community, and Section 499 on defamation.

Noting that he will be lodging a report with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) on the matter, Ramli also said that he is considering suing the social media user for at least RM1 million in damages.

“My advice to my (Orang Asli) community is to seek knowledge and learn from past experiences so that you’re not taken advantage of by those who might have their own agenda,” he added.

Last month, Ramli said constitutional amendments seeking the federal and state governments to undertake a duty of care for the Orang Asli community are expected to be tabled in Parliament by 2027. – July 16, 2024
