KUALA LUMPUR – The Edge Communications Sdn Bhd found itself in the crosshairs of Human Resource Development Corporation (HRD Corp) after being served a letter of demand over the portal’s coverage of the findings by Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) and the Auditor-General’s (A-G) Report.

The news site was accused of “unfairly, deliberately, maliciously, and recklessly” publishing two articles titled “PAC flags dubious property deals by HRD Corp”, and “Frankly Speaking: Total breach of governance at HRD Corp”.

Quoting PAC’s findings, the portal highlighted HRD Corp’s property transactions, including one RM154 million performed without the board of directors’ approval.

PAC chairperson Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudi was also quoted in the article on inconsistent procedural standards over HRD Corp’s property acquisitions.

The Edge also had also reported on HRD Corp’s investment practices which was flagged by PAC and the A-G.

Although the findings by PAC and the A-G were reported by other media organisations, HRD Corp in its letter of demand claimed that The Edge tarnished the reputation of its appointed officials and staff in its articles.

HRD Corp added that it was incorrect to say the entity failed the audit and mishandled funds.

For the record, the A-G reported that HRD Corp’s corporate governance practices were unsatisfactory, adding that certain decisions by the management did not comply with procedures or protect the corporation’s interests.

The audit also mentions that HRD Corp has not realised its objectives because of poor governance according to set rules and procedures.

The A-G also recommended the Human Resources Ministry take appropriate action against HRD Corp’s management and refer issues to relevant enforcement authorities.

In addition to a retraction and apology, HRD Corp demands The Edge pay damages for grievances. – July 16, 2024
