KUALA LUMPUR – A husband and wife were among the three fatalities in a two-vehicle accident on Jalan Mengabang Lekor, Batu Rakit in Kuala Nerus, Terengganu, yesterday.

The accident, which occurred at 9.15pm, involved a Proton Wira and a Nissan Navara 4WD.

Kuala Terengganu police chief Azli Mohd Noor said the victims who died were the passenger of the Navara, Zaini Ambak, 46, and the driver and passenger of the Wira, Muhammad Iqwan Ahmad Izeham, 23, and Nur Mimi Aliya Mohd Shukri, 18.

Iqwan, who was driving the Proton Wira, succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment at Kuala Terengganu’s Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital (HSNZ), he added.

“Meanwhile, Nur Mimi Aliya, who was in the Proton Wira, and Zaini, who was riding in a Nissan Navara driven by her husband, died at the scene of the accident,” he said in a statement.

Azli said the accident occurred when the Wira was travelling from Setiu towards Kuala Terengganu while the Navara was returning home to Kg Rahmat from the Kg Pak Tuyu night market.

He added that initial findings revealed that the Wira lost control, crossing into the opposite lane and crashing into the Navara.

“The collision caused extensive damage to both vehicles, resulting in the immediate deaths of the passengers. The critically injured Proton Wira driver later succumbed to his injuries in the hospital.

“The Nissan Navara driver, Rasdi Yaakob, 58, who is Zaini’s husband, was also injured and is currently receiving treatment at HSNZ.

“Heavy rain and slippery road conditions contributed to the incident,” he added.

Azli said that all the bodies were sent to the forensic unit of HSNZ for further action, and the case was being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. – July 12, 2024
