KUALA LUMPUR – Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo said a guideline will be introduced to ensure artificial intelligence (AI) innovation and developments adhere to government principles.
Responding to a motion brought by Young Syefura Othman (Bentong-PH) on regulating AI development in the country during today’s Special Chambers session, he said that the Science, Technology, and Innovation Ministry (Mosti) is currently researching and developing AI governance and ethics guidelines to promote the safe use of the technology.
However, Gobind clarified that setting guidelines for AI technology differs from implementing strict regulatory measures.
“In foreign countries, they have a ‘light touch’ approach where they don’t impose strict rules but provide guidelines that tech companies should follow.
“Similarly, we will set guidelines in Malaysia.”
He said the ministry has collaborated with MyDigital Corporation, an agency under its purview, to transform Malaysia into a digitally driven, high-income nation.
MyDigital Corporation serves as Malaysia’s host for the Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution, facilitating the country’s participation in crucial AI discussions, he added.
Gobind also said the government encourages R&D efforts related to AI, whether they are open-source like ChatGPT or CoPilot.
However, he stressed the importance of data management and the quality of AI sources, emphasising the need for rigorous data classification. – July 3, 2024
