Syed Saddiq completes 200km run, raises RM160,000 to protest against lack of allocations

Muda MP says effort was to highlight principle that funds should be given to lawmakers from both sides of the divide

KUALA LUMPUR – Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has completed his 200-km run from his constituency in Johor to Parliament this morning, raising RM160,000 in the process, to highlight the lack of government allocations given to opposition MPs.

He arrived outside the Parliament gates at 9.30am, accompanied by Machang MP Wan Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal for the last few kilometres of his run.

The former Muda president told reporters after completing his “protest run” – dubbed “Langkah Muar” – that it was based on “justice” and the principle that funds should be given to all MPs regardless whether from the government or opposition, as the money was meant for the people.

“As an opposition MP, nothing is given to run a service centre, pay staff or to provide welfare assistance,” Muda’s sole MP said.

Under the present government, ruling party MPs receive about RM4 million a year. Syed Saddiq lost his allocation after he withdrew support for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s government in September 2023.

He has also filed for a judicial review against the prime minister and government over unpaid allocations.

Syed Saddiq started his run on Friday, covering 73km that day, another 53.5km on Saturday, and 59km yesterday.

He ran another 20km today before reaching the Parliament building. – July 1, 2024
