KUALA LUMPUR – A landslide occurred at the foot of Mount Kinabalu around Mesilou, Kundasang, here, earlier this morning.

A spokesperson for the Sabah Fire and Rescue Department’s Operations Centre said that no property damage or casualties have been reported as a result of the incident, Bernama reported.

“A team from the Ranau Fire and Rescue Station has been dispatched to the scene, and monitoring is ongoing,” he said.

Ranau station head, Ridwan Mohd Taib, said that monitoring is being conducted in collaboration with members of the Civil Defence Force near the landslide site to ensure the safety of the surrounding community.

According to the Daily Express, Sabah Parks director Maklarin Lakim said that the incident occurred in the Ulu Sg Mesilau area within Kinabalu Park.

“Landslides occurred far from the mountain-climbing trail, and there were no accidents involving humans. We are currently monitoring the development of landslides upstream of the Mesilau River and its impact on river water flow. The situation is currently under control,” he was quoted as saying.

Residents nearby reported feeling tremors following the landslide.

A homestay owner in Mesilou, Ahmad Raqif Hamzali, 47, reported that residents in the area felt tremors between 9 and 10 in the morning.

“When I looked, it seemed like there was water coming down from the mountain (Mount Kinabalu), but the area is far from houses and hiking trails,” he said.

He said that the incident has caused the Mesilou River to become murky and muddy. – June 24, 2024
