KUALA LUMPUR – The Nenggiri state seat in Kelantan has officially been declared vacant, following notices submitted by Mohd Azizi Abu Naim who was elected its assemblyman, and Bersatu, regarding the termination of the elected representative’s party membership.

Kelantan state assembly speaker Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah told a press conference today the seat was declared vacant after his office received notices under Clause (3) Article 31A of the state constitution.

The notice from Bersatu, Mohd Amar said, was received on June 12 while Mohd Azizi had submitted his own notice on the matter the following day.

“According to Clause 4(4) Article 31A, vacant seats must be filled within 60 days from the date the Election Commission receives the vacancy notice,” Mohd Amar added.

Scoop has reached out to Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul for confirmation on whether Mohd Azizi, who is also the Gua Musang MP, had also submitted to the lower House a notice regarding his membership status.

On June 7, Johari said he had not received official notice from any party regarding the vacant seats involving six Bersatu MPs who had their party membership revoked.

The six Bersatu MPs and one state assemblyman had their membership revoked immediately after failing to respond to a written instruction from the party’s supreme leadership council to pledge allegiance to the party.

The six MPs are Mohd Azizi, Datuk Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal (Bukit Gantang), Zahari Kechik (Jeli), Datuk Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid (Kuala Kangsar), Datuk Suhaili Abdul Rahman (Labuan), and Datuk Dr Zulkafperi Hanafi (Tanjong Karang).

The assemblyman is Datuk Abdul Rashid Asari (Selat Klang). – June 19, 2024
