KUALA LUMPUR – Perikatan Nasional (PN) has chosen Sg Bakap local Abidin Ismail, 56, as its candidate for the state assembly by-election in Penang on July 6.

The announcement was made by PAS deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man at a candidate declaration ceremony held in Bandar Tasek Mutiara, Penang, this evening.

Abidin, who is also PAS Nibong Tebal deputy chief, previously served as a special officer to the former seat holder, Nor Zamri Latiff, 56, who passed away from abdominal inflammation on May 24.

“God willing, I will continue brother Zam’s (Nor Zamri) legacy. I have learned a lot from him,” he said.

The Election Commission has set July 6 as the polling day for the Sg Bakap by-election, while June 22 and July 2 are designated for candidate nomination and early voting, respectively.

Abidin was born in Kg Sg Duri and received his early education at Sekolah Kebangsaan Sg Duri and his secondary education at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Tun Syed Sheh Barakbah.

He has 30 years of experience working as a logistics executive at USG Sdn Bhd.

Abidin is also the election director for PAS in the Sg Bakap state constituency and serves as the chairman of the Sg Duri Mosque.

In the Penang state election last August, Nor Zamri, who was also the PAS Nibong Tebal chief, defeated the Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidate, Nurhidayah Che Rose, by a majority of 1,563 votes.

Last Wednesday, PH announced Joohari Ariffin, director of the Aminuddin Baki Institute’s northen chapter, as their candidate for the Sg Bakap by-election. – June 16, 2024
