KUALA LUMPUR – The parents of murdered autistic boy Zayn Rayyan Abdul Matiin will be charged at the Petaling Jaya Court today.
Speaking to Scoop, lawyer Fahmi Abd Moin confirmed the matter.
Meanwhile, media started gathering as early as 7am at the Petaling Jaya court complex, awaiting the outcome of today’s proceedings.
The couple arrived at the court around 9.15am.
Yesterday, Fahmi, representing Zayn’s father, said the second remand period for the child’s parents will end today and will not be extended, as they have reached the maximum 13-day remand period limit.
The parents were arrested by the Selangor police criminal investigation department on May 31, and have been remanded to assist the police investigation under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder starting June 1.
On December 6 last year, the 6-year-old’s body was found at a stream near Idaman Apartments, Damansara Damai.
Based on a post-mortem conducted, the child was killed based on injuries found on his neck and body.
Meanwhile, Zayn’s grandparents were detained at the Petaling Jaya district police headquarters yesterday.
A source told Scoop that the pair were detained to assist in the investigation. However, the source did not provide further details.
Meanwhile, lawyer Mahmud Jumaat, representing Zayn’s mother, Ismanira Abdul Manaf, has also confirmed that the couple will be charged, however, he could not confirm under which section.
“Police informed me this morning to appear in court. To be fair, I believe the Attorney-General’s Chamber made their decision to file any charges late last night.
“I’m not sure what section they will be charged under. We’ll have to wait and see,” he told reporters.
Mahmud was met at the court complex earlier.
Initially, they were both represented by Mahmud, who later withdrew a few days after the remand application proceedings.
On June 5, Fahmi was appointed by the family, though Mahmud continues to represent only the boy’s mother while Fahmi represents the father. – June 13, 2024
