KUALA LUMPUR – The Malay College Kuala Kangsar (MCKK) is set to host the much-anticipated MCKK Premier 7s Rugby Tournament from June 28 to 30.

Marking its 12th edition, this prestigious event promises to deliver a thrilling showcase of young rugby talent from around the globe.

This year’s tournament will feature fierce competition with 24 participating schools, including international teams from Japan, Indonesia, and Chinese Taipei – adding a global dimension to the competition.

These teams will compete for the coveted NJ Ryan Trophy and the Zaharuddin Alias Best Player Award, enhancing the tournament’s prestige and appeal.

Tournament committee chairman Amrul Hazarin Hamidon expressed his enthusiasm for the participation of international teams.

“We have observed significant improvement in the performance of teams from Indonesia and Japan over the years.

“This year, we are excited to welcome a mystery team from Chinese Taipei to join the tournament for the first time.

“We expect intense competition from these international teams,” he said during a press conference today.

Amrul also highlighted the readiness of the Malaysian teams.

“Our local teams have been preparing diligently and are looking forward to competing in this prestigious event. Their preparation and enthusiasm will undoubtedly result in an impressive performance.”

The tournament’s return will also feature reigning champion SMK Jalan Tiga as well as those ready to reclaim their titles – Johor Bahru’s Maktab Sultan Abu Bakar, Tunku Mahkota Ismail Sports School and host team MCKK.

Other formidable contenders, including the Royal Military College, Kuala Lumpur’s SMK Victoria, and Putrajaya’s Sultan Alam Shah School will also compete, ensuring a gripping event for rugby enthusiasts.

Last year’s tournament saw a surprise victory for SMK Jalan Tiga in their debut appearance, securing the championship title with a commanding 24-0 victory over Sekolah Sukan Malaysia Pahang in the final.

This year, all eyes will be on whether they can maintain their winning streak amidst tough competition. – June 11, 2024
