KUALA LUMPUR – The question of whether the parents of murdered 11-year-old Zayn Rayyan Abdul Matiin will face charges or be released will be resolved on Thursday.

The couple is currently in remand, aiding the investigation into their son’s murder, but legal sources note that the remand period under Section 302 of the Penal Code (murder) cannot be extended further.

“In any case, like this one, the first remand is seven days and the second remand is six days. Once this period is over, the police cannot apply for a new remand under Section 302 of the Penal Code.

“So, this Thursday will determine whether they will be released or charged,” a source told Scoop.

Earlier today, Zayn’s mother was taken back to their home at Idaman Apartments, Damansara Damai, Petaling Jaya.

This visit was reportedly to reenact the events leading up to the child’s disappearance and the discovery of his body on December 6 last year.

An unmarked police van brought Zayn’s mother to Block R at 10.15am, although Zayn’s father was not seen. Police sources confirmed that he will not be brought to their residence for investigation tomorrow.

Fahmi Abd Moin, the lawyer representing both parents, declined to comment on the police process involving Zayn’s mother this morning. Instead, Fahmi urged patience, awaiting the decision from the Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC).

“We need to wait for the AGC’s decision. I haven’t received any notification regarding whether the suspects will be charged,” he said.

Additionally, lawyer Mahmud Jumaat confirmed to Scoop that he has been representing Zayn’s mother since last Friday.

Last Friday, the police extended the parents’ remand to allow for further investigation. Selangor Police Chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said that the couple would be in remand for six days until June 13.

The 28-year-old couple was remanded under Section 302 of the Penal Code after being arrested in the Puncak Alam area on May 31.

On December 6, last year, Zayn was found dead in a stream near Idaman Apartments, Damansara Damai, around 10pm. Local residents discovered his body approximately 200m from his residential block after he was reported missing. – June 10, 2024
