KUALA LUMPUR – Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s two sons have been granted their fourth deadline extension by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to comply with a notice for them to declare their assets.

MACC chief Tan Sri Azam Baki said the lawyers for Mirzan Mahathir and Tan Sri Mokhzani Mahathir had been in contact with the investigating officers on the new deadlines.

However, he stopped short of revealing the new deadline.

“We have set the date for them to start declaring their assets. That is the agreement we reached on the matters,” he was quoted as saying by Bernama after a book event here today.

On May 25, Scoop reported that sources said the duo had not submitted any property declaration documents as required under Section 36(1)(b) of the MACC Act 2009.

Previously, the MACC had granted three extensions to Mirzan and Mokhzani, which ended this month – for the former on May 15 and the latter on May 25.

On April 27, they said they were not the subject of any MACC investigation, adding that they were only required to declare their assets over a period of 43 years.

The duo added that most of the documents were no longer available, especially from financial institutions and the public sector.

The brothers, in their statement, cited that even the Inland Revenue Board only required taxpayers to keep sufficient records for seven years, as did the Registrar of Companies.

On April 16, Dr Mahathir claimed that graft busters were saying he had committed an offence under Section 23 of the MACC Act, according to a notice sent to his son, Mirzan. – May 29, 2024
