KUALA LUMPUR – Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor is set to face a sedition trial after the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) rejected his representation letter seeking to have his charges dropped.

Deputy public prosecutor Datuk Masri Mohd Daud informed high court judge Datuk Aslam Zainuddin of the AGC’s decision at today’s proceedings.

He also confirmed that the AGC had made the decision on May 3 and that Sanusi had been informed earlier.

This means that the prosecution will have to lay its case against Sanusi in court proceedings, which are expected to start on July 22. Previously, the court fixed July 22, 23, 26, 29 and 30, as well as August 5, 6, 9, 12 and 13, for trial.

Sanusi is facing two criminal charges for allegedly uttering seditious words regarding the appointment of the Selangor menteri besar and the setting up of the unity government at a political event.

He earlier kept his not guilty plea when the two sedition charges were read to him following the transfer of the case from the Selayang sessions court to the high court here on February 1.

He was accused of committing the offence at Simpang 4, Taman Selayang Mutiara-Kampung Bendahara, Gombak, around 11pm on July 11 last year.

His charges are framed under Section 4(1)(b) of the Sedition Act 1948, which is punishable under Section 4(1) of the same law, carrying the sentence of a fine of RM5,000 or a maximum jail sentence of three years, or both, if convicted. – May 17, 2024
