KUALA LUMPUR – Police are investigating a message that was seen on a Domino’s Pizza receipt, which was deemed as insulting to Islam.

Penang’s southwest district police chief Kamarul Rizal Jenal said the incident is being investigated under Section 298 of the Penal Code and Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act, which makes it a criminal offence to insult any religion.

“Our investigation found that an order placed on May 15, 3.05pm via the Domino’s application with the offensive remark. On the same night at 8.46pm, the police received reports that it involved an outlet in Bayan Lepas, Penang.

“On May 16 at 8am, a photo of the receipt was uploaded on an X account known as @update1111,” he added in a statement.

In response, Domino’s Pizza Malaysia issued a statement, saying: “the receipt was printed at its outlet in Sungai Ara, Bayan Lepas.”

“Based on our findings, the offensive remark was made by a customer known as Moe Aung who placed an order online. However, the customer did not show up to collect and pay for the food.

“Domino’s Pizza Malaysia hopes that its customers do not place scam orders and be more responsible.”

Meanwhile, Bayan Lepas assemblyman Azrul Mahathir Aziz said Domino’s has lodged a police report over the incident.

“I hope those who provoke the public using 3R (race, religion, royalty) issues will be apprehended quickly. I also hope the public remains calm and leave it to the authorities to investigate.” – May 16, 2024
