KUALA LUMPUR – The status of the upcoming rugby match between Malaysia and Singapore scheduled on Saturday is uncertain, with doubts lingering if it will be designated as a test match or a friendly encounter.

Speaking to Scoop, the head coach of the 15s squad, Farid Syazwan Abu Bakar expressed his uncertainty, stating that they are yet to receive official confirmation regarding the nature of the match set to take place at the Johor Rugby Stadium.

Should the match be officially recognised as a test match, it would hold significance in terms of earning world ranking points, with each team restricted to a squad of 23 players.

Conversely, if it is deemed a friendly game, its outcome would not impact the ranking positions of the participating nations.

“Initially, what was communicated was that Singapore wanted to hold a test match, and the request was formally sent to World Rugby.

“However, until now, there has been no response as to whether this Saturday’s match is a test match or a friendly game.

“If it is a friendly game, then we can bring all 34 players in the squad to face Singapore and the result of the match is not our priority – although we aim for victory.

“Our main objective is to field the best lineup for the upcoming Asia Rugby Championship,” said Farid.

Based on the latest world ranking standings, Malaysia is ranked 50th globally, while Singapore is ranked 55th.

Saturday’s match will be a test for Malaysia, which will face teams such as South Korea, Hong Kong, and the United Arab Emirates in the Asia Rugby Championship starting June. – May 9, 2024
