KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will be inking a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with tech giant Microsoft to facilitate upskilling initiatives, according to Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching.

Teo, who announced the MoU while delivering her closing remarks at the 2024 International Regulatory Conference (IRC) here today, expressed a positive outlook on cooperation between the two entities.

“This strategic collaboration will see MCMC and Microsoft working together to see how we can upscale our workforce, including by tapping into our current resources to teach citizens how to use AI (artificial intelligence) technology,” the deputy minister told reporters.

The MoU, she said, will be signed by representatives from both parties on May 14.

In her speech, Teo highlighted that the MoU aims to generate socioeconomic benefits through the use of AI technologies, including through the promotion and implementation of skills initiatives and breakthrough AI applications by MCMC.

The MoU, Teo said, will utilise Microsoft’s AI skilling initiatives through the MCMC’s National Information Dissemination Centres (NADi) or other platforms as appropriate.

The partnership also seeks to promote the responsible adoption of AI for an inclusive and equitable AI-driven future, she added.

“I am optimistic that with our focus on ensuring the availability and responsible use of these new technologies, we will empower Malaysia to thrive in the digital age and bring about tangible benefits to our society.”

On May 2, Microsoft announced that it will invest US$2.2 billion (RM10.5 billion) over the next four years to support Malaysia’s digital transformation, particularly regarding AI infrastructure and skills.

Microsoft said the investment demonstrates its commitment to developing Malaysia as a hub for cloud computing and related advanced technologies, including generative AI, thus supporting the nation’s productivity, competitiveness, resilience and economic growth.

Meanwhile, Teo urged participants of the IRC to reflect on the valuable input and views obtained over the past two days of the conference.

“These insights have deepened our understanding of global regulatory challenges and broadened our perspective on crafting and implementing effective compliance strategies.”

Organised by MCMC, the two-day IRC conference, held at the St Regis Hotel here, featured international speakers who shared insights and engaged in dialogues on regulatory frameworks and emerging technologies. – May 7, 2024
