Syamer Kutty is not Penang FC’s sole gamechanger: coach Akmal

Club’s new head coach stresses importance of teamwork to achieve goal thus focusing on one player would be counterproductive

KUALA LUMPUR – Penang FC made it clear that they would not solely rely on their new signing Syamer Kutty to improve the club’s standings in this season’s Malaysia Super League.

The 26-year-old Syamer, who began his career with the Black Panthers in 2013, returned to the northern east side on loan from Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT).

A total of six players, including Syamer, have been loaned out from JDT with hopes of gaining more playing time in the Super League.

Speaking to Scoop, Penang FC’s newly appointed head coach Akmal Rizal said that the experienced defensive midfielder should not consider himself the superstar of the team.

He stressed the importance of teamwork in achieving the club’s goals for the season.

For the record, Syamer has been a regular feature in the national football team, making 35 appearances since his debut in 2017.

Previously, Scoop reported that Penang was hoping for a midtable finish in this season’s Super League campaign.

“Syamer has to understand that he’s not the superstar player in the team and he has to work together with the entire team. That’s why I also brought in experienced players like Khairu Azrin and Izzat Zikri to complement him in the midfield area.

“I can’t depend on only one player to make a change for us, and Syamer should also take this as a challenge and start synchronising with his teammates.

“It may be easier for him at JDT, but at Penang FC, he has to step up and prove his worth. We can only become the best if we work together as a team instead of focusing on Syamer alone,” Akmal said when contacted.

While expecting Syamer to strengthen the team’s midfield, Akmal also anticipates him to be a role model for the young players in the squad.

“Midfield has been our biggest problem last season, and Syamer’s arrival is aimed at shoring up our midfield to prevent conceding goals.

“His experience with both JDT and the senior national team can bring a positive change. He can both defend and contribute offensively, as seen in his performances over the years.

“I expect him to lead the team and guide all our young players to be like him,” Akmal added.

Penang FC hold the record for winning the league three times (1982, 1998, and 2001), the FA Cup once (2002), and the Malaysia Cup four times (1953, 1954, 1958, and 1974).

This season’s Super League campaign is expected to begin on May 10.

Last season, the club finished 10th in the Super League with 24 points. – April 29, 2024
