PUTRAJAYA – The Digital Ministry will make an announcement on Digital Nasional Berhad’s (DNB) board of directors’ appointments tomorrow, according to Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil.

He also said Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo will announce DNB’s direction for the future during an event in Penang tomorrow.

This follows an agreement made during the cabinet meeting today which stressed on the adoption of the 5G network, Fahmi said during his weekly press conference as the government spokesman.

Meanwhile, Fahmi said the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (Mida) are working to hasten 5G adoption among industries and the micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSME) sectors.

“MCMC and Mida will have a discussion, and sign a memorandum of understanding in the near future to hasten the adoption for 5G networks in the MSME and industry sectors,” he said.

“Besides the benefits of 5G to the people… the real potential of 5G is its adoption and usage in the industry and enterprise sectors.”

Fahmi also said further announcements about the implementation of 5G will be made next week.

“The announcement will convey a clear direction (on the network), including about the policy of 5G dual-network,” he said.

DNB is the government’s special purpose vehicle established in 2021 under the Finance Ministry, and is currently the sole owner of the 5G spectrum network. It was responsible for rolling out 5G coverage before a second network is to be formed this year.

However, DNB is said to be plagued by problems involving the appointment of directors to represent the five private telecommunications companies within DNB, according to a Channel News Asia report on April 19.

Following the report, DNB denied allegations of not being transparent in its internal operations and rejected insinuations of any impropriety in its governance and procurement practices. – April 24, 2024
