Phone was used to disseminate old video that caused confusion on social media, portraying civil servants in negative light, it says

KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has confiscated a SIM card and mobile phone belonging to the operator of MyNewsHub’s social media platform.

MCMC’s corporate communications department said the mobile phone had been used to upload an old video, seemingly to paint civil servants in a negative light, and had caused confusion on social media.

The regulator summoned the operator to its headquarters in Cyberjaya at about 8.40pm yesterday to record his statement about the matter.

“After the probe is done, the investigation papers will be sent to the Attorney-General’s Chambers for further instructions,” it said in a statement today.

“Investigating officers have seized a SIM card and a mobile phone, which were used to upload the video.”

MCMC reiterated that it is taking the incident involving the one-minute and 10-second video – titled “Tanya pasal kuarters je dh kene mcm tu depan KSN!!” – seriously.

It added that uploading content intending to hurt or disturb others is an offence under the MCMC Act 1998.

In a statement yesterday, the Public Service Department said the video was of a simulation scenario aimed at testing security personnel’s preparation in the event of provocative attacks.

The incident is being investigated under Section 233 of the MCMC Act and may result in jail time of up to a year, a maximum of RM50,000 in fines, or both if found guilty.

MCMC also reminded the public against misusing network or online application services to spread fake or unauthentic content. – April 13, 2024
