KUALA LUMPUR — Penang FC is looking to the south to sign a star Harimau Malaya player for their upcoming 2024/2025 Malaysia Super League campaign.
According to a highly placed source from the football fraternity who spoke to Scoop, negotiations are ongoing between the player and the club, and his status as a Penang FC player will be announced in the coming days.
However, the source did not reveal the name, but it was hinted that the player is someone Penang FC developed and who now plies his trade down south.
“Penang FC has a history of developing many players for the national team in the past, and many of their young players have gone on to create a name for themselves across the country and become star players for other clubs.
“The player they are planning to sign on loan from the south is someone who has etched his name in the club as a star player.
“He has not been getting the game time he deserves at his current club, and this deal could be a move for him to get more game time so that he can be on the national team radar on a regular basis,” said the source.
Penang FC, under the tutelage of former national player Akmal Rizal, has so far signed two foreign players — Brazilian-born Rodrigo Dias from Kuwait-based Khaitan Sporting Club FC and Ghanaian-born Richmond Ankrah on loan from Selangor FC.
The club, known affectionately as ‘the Black Panthers’ by fans, holds the record for winning the League thrice (1982, 1998, and 2001), the FA Cup once (2002), and the Malaysia Cup four times (1953, 1954, 1958, and 1974).
This season’s Super League campaign is expected to begin on May 10.
Last season, the club finished 10th in the Super League with 24 points. — April 9, 2024
