KUALA LUMPUR – National Sports Council (NSC) director-general Abdul Rashid Yaakub’s contract has been extended by one year, said Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh today.

It is understood that Rashid was originally set to retire on April 1, but will now continue to helm the NSC until April 2025.

“We have extended the NSC director-general Abdul Rashid’s contract by one year.

“I hope in this one year he will continue to serve and make reforms to the NSC for the good of national athletes and coaches,” Hannah told reporters after an NSC breaking-of-fast event with the sports community at Bukit Jalil here today.

This extension will see Rashid lead the NSC through the Paris Olympics and Paralympics in July and August respectively.

Rashid was appointed as the council’s director-general on November 1, succeeding Datuk Ahmad Shapawi Ismail, who officially retired on September 28 last year.

With an illustrious 35-year tenure at the NSC, Rashid holds a master’s degree in business administration from Universiti Utara Malaysia.

His journey within the council began in July 1988 as head of its finance unit, a role he held until 2002.

Subsequently, he served in various capacities including as finance branch director (2003-2006), management services division director (2007-2017), corporate division director (2018-2019), and most recently, as deputy director-general for management from 2020.

In January, the NSC announced the appointment of Jefri Ngadirin and Arrifin Mohd Ghani as its new deputy director-generals.

Jefri, 51, assumed the role of deputy director-general for sports development, while Arrifin, 55, took on the position of deputy director-general for commercialisation and marketing. – April 5, 2024
