PUTRAJAYA – The unity government leadership council will discuss the suggestions by the opposition regarding constituency allocations, said Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil.
The minister said the proposals from the opposition, which were initially voiced during a meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, would be presented to the council for its consideration.
“After that, if discussions with the opposition go well, then the matter (relating to constituency allocations) will be brought to the cabinet to be decided on,” Fahmi told reporters at the sidelines of an event, here, today.
Noting that the issue was addressed during today’s cabinet meeting, Fahmi reiterated that the government had not handed over a draft on constituency allocations to the opposition.
On March 19, Fadillah held a meeting with Bersatu secretary-general Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin, PAS secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan and Bersatu vice-president Datuk Seri Ronald Kiandee.
Two days later, Hamzah, who is also opposition leader, told Parliament that the opposition received a draft from Fadillah outlining the government’s proposal for annual constituency development allocations.
He claimed that the opposition would discuss and sign the draft before receiving the allocation for their respective constituencies.
Fahmi has repeatedly refuted such claims, stressing that there have not been any drafts on constituency allocations exchanged between the government and opposition.
The minister had also lambasted Bersatu Youth chief Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal after the latter doubled down on assertions that the opposition had received the document. – March 29, 2024
