KUALA LUMPUR – Renowned activist Annie Ooi, who never faltered in her dedication to social justice causes, has reportedly died.

Endearingly known as Aunty Bersih, news of her death was shared by Khazanah Research Institute climate and industrial policy deputy director Yin Shao Loong, on X today.

“Rest in peace, Auntie Bersih @ Anne Ooi. You were an inspiration to us all,” Yin said in a brief posting.

However, other details of Ooi’s death were not revealed.

Annie Ooi, recognised for her presence at major rallies, was considered an integral part of the protests over the past two decades.

Many remembered the 78-year-old’s confrontations with authority, including her daring challenges to be arrested.

One of Ooi’s notable arrests occurred during the Black 505 rally protesting the general election results in 2013. Recalling her time in custody, she spoke of the harsh conditions endured by inmates, highlighting the deplorable treatment they received.

Despite facing imprisonment multiple times, Ooi remained resolute in her commitment to combat injustice.

Her journey to prominence began after the 2007 Bersih rally, where a powerful image captured her amidst the crowd, drenched from the water cannons used by authorities.

Ooi’s activism extended beyond mere symbolism. She was a vocal advocate for the rights of low-income earners.

Her presence at rallies was a testament to her dedication to causes she held dear.

At one of the protests, Ooi was seen carrying a banner demanding fair wages, voicing her dissent against the inadequate RM1,050 minimum wage proposal, and emphasising the unfulfilled promise of RM1,500.
