Muda considers Syed Saddiq-PN roadshow issue closed

Youth-based party maintains stance as third force ‘inside and outside Parliament’

KUALA LUMPUR – Muda has reminded members not to issue statements not aligned with the party’s decisions, following the surprise announcement of its ex-president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman’s participation in a Perikatan National (PN) roadshow.

A statement by the party this morning said “any announcement” related to the party and its leadership will only be made through its official platform.

“The issue of Muda’s participation in the viral event has already been answered by Muda’s leadership.

“We would like to once again, strictly remind all parties not to arbitrarily issue statements that go beyond the party’s decision.”

The statement did not categorically state if Syed Saddiq was or was not joining the roadshow, but reiterated Muda’s stand as a third-force “inside and outside of Parliament”.

The statement follows the party’s Central Executive Committee meeting with Syed Saddiq to “discuss action plans for issues that are pressing for the people”.

Muda said this was a “regular meeting”, amid earlier furore over being caught off-guard when PN chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announced Syed Saddiq’s participation in the PN nationwide tour.

Syed Saddiq had also subsequently said Muda should join the roadshow, leading to more confusion.

After Muhyiddin’s announcement, Muda secretary-general Amir Hariri Abd Hadi distanced the party from the PN roadshow, saying no such decision to join the tour, scheduled for after Aidilfitri, had been made.

Acting president Amira Aisya Abd Aziz said two nights ago that the party, including Syed Saddiq, was caught by surprise over Muhyiddin’s announcement.

She also acknowledged unhappiness among Muda’s members over the issue, adding that such concerns were “fair”.

The rest of Muda’s statement today said it would continue to be the voice of the people by emphasising the higher cost of living, fair allocations for all MPs, including the opposition, institutional reforms promised by the government that have not yet been implemented, and rejection of proposed constitutional reforms on citizenship that will affect vulnerable and marginalised children.

Muda, formerly an ally of Pakatan Harapan in the 2022 general election, cut ties with the government bloc last year to join the opposition bench to protest the discharge not amounting to an acquittal granted to Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi in his graft trial. – March 15, 2024
