KUALA LUMPUR – Customers and Mydin staffers were unhurt when the outlet in Manjoi, Perak caught fire at about 6.45pm yesterday.
Fire and Rescue Department personnel and supermarket staff managed to get everyone out of the premises safely, Mydin Mohamed Holdings Bhd said in a statement today.
The company added that the outlet will be reopened after the fire department gives the greenlight to do so.
Perak Fire and Rescue Department director Sayani Saidon said the blaze was brought under control by midnight, but they were still in the process of dousing the fire completely.
The operation involved 123 firefighters from the department, Rela and General Operations Force (APM), and at the same time was assisted by Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB), Lembaga Air Perak (LAP), Mydin staff, Manjoi assemblyman Hafez Sabri and the Tambun parliamentary service centre.
Sayani added that when firefighters arrived at the scene at 7.25pm, there was no fire but smoke was billowing from the main switch board of the Mydin hypermarket. However, about 20 minutes later, a security guard at the hypermarket informed the firefighters that there was fire on the roof of the building.
The department is now waiting for the forensic report.
Meanwhile, a worker from Mydin told Bernama that a small fire had started at the store situated at the back on the second floor at about 6.45pm.
