KUALA LUMPUR – The government will continue to implement measures aimed at curbing the spread of “liberal agendas” deemed to be contrary to Islamic values, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Mohd Na’im Mokhtar.

In a parliamentary written reply, the minister said that the government has consistently paid attention to the spread of deviant teachings and ideologies, including liberal Islam, which contradicts the principles of the Sunni branch of Islam or Ahli Sunnah Wal Jamaah.

“In an effort to curb the spread of liberal Islam disguised behind discourse and dialogue programmes, government agencies at the federal and state level will continue to cooperate to ensure (that such events) do not involve individuals who support liberal Islam.

“All parties are advised to refer to religious authorities to ensure the invited panel has obtained certification from the state’s mufti office so that initial screening can be conducted,” Na’im said.

The minister was answering a question posed by PAS MP Datuk Ahmad Saad@Yahaya (Pokok Sena-PN) on the spread of liberal Islam through public forums.

Besides that, Na’im also said that the Islamic Development Department, in collaboration with state Religious Affairs Departments and mufti offices has implemented elucidation programmes in various forums to hinder the spread of liberal ideals.

“The government will also continue to implement long-term measures by strengthening formal and informal Islamic education in local education institutes while streamlining related laws to prevent the spread of liberal agendas against the Muslim community,” he added. – March 8, 2024
