SEPANG – In conjunction with next month’s Aidilfitri celebrations, AirAsia has introduced promotional airfares of RM348 for a one-way flight in economy class from Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru to Sabah, and RM298 for flights to Sarawak.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke said that the fare applies to flights between April 5 to 17, and bookings are open from today. The initiative will benefit 22,000 passengers.

The fixed low-cost fares include 8% service tax, an increase from 6% which took effect on March 1, he added during a press conference at the AirAsia headquarters here, today.

The RM348 fare is applicable for trips from Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru to Sabah, which includes Kota Kinabalu, Tawau and Sandakan.

For flights departing from the same cities to Sarawak, the RM298 for is for trips to Kuching, Miri, Bintulu, and Sibu.

Compared to fares for last year’s Aidilfitri, AirAsia has provided a bigger discount, Loke said.

Last year, the maximum fare for one-way flights from KLIA to East Malaysia prior to the Aidilfitri festive season was RM599.

Loke acknowledged that fares last year had burdened East Malaysians when they returned to their hometowns in Sabah and Sarawak, as they had to pay up to RM1,000 for two-way travel. – March 4, 2024
