KUALA LUMPUR – Despite his authoritative demeanour, Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim managed to treat the Dewan Rakyat to a glimpse of his witty side today.
During his inaugural royal address today, he slid in several quips about the length of his speech.
“‘Panjang pula’…(the speech is long),” he briefly said while flipping through his speech text.
Before ending his royal address, Sultan Ibrahim also joked that several of the lawmakers would fall asleep should he continue talking.
“I am worried that some (of the MPs) would fall asleep if (my speech) is too long, so I shall keep it short.”
He also flashed a smile at the MPs just before starting his speech.
However, Sultan Ibrahim did warn against attempts to topple the government, and reminded all lawmakers to maintain decorum during parliamentary sessions.
He also said he would closely monitor the government’s spending to ensure that all expenditure proposals are channelled to improve the lives of Malaysians.
The King subsequently urged for all to not politicise religion in Malaysia nor harp on 3R (race, religion and royalty) issues. – February 26, 2024
