Stop recycling old issues, car number plate changed to follow JPJ rules: Young Syefura

Netizens attempted to shame her by sharing photos of her old license plate which violated regulations

KUALA LUMPUR – Bentong MP Young Syefura Othman has slammed netizens who have been circulating her car number plate RAR 4 that did not adhere to guidelines released by the Road Transport Department (JPJ).

The issue cropped up when the “before” photo was widely shared in social media where the plate number RAR 4, which is a play on her popular moniker Rara, did not have a character spacing in between the three letters and the number.

According to JPJ guidelines, there must be a spacing between the letters and numbers, and in her case it should be displayed as RAR 4.

While admitting that her old plate was a mistake, Young Syefura of DAP said she has gotten it changed to adhere to the regulation.

“Why keep recycling old issues? Here are the number plates of my two cars.

“For the record, JPJ had issued a notice (to me) before the plates were changed according to (the right) specifications.

“Don’t slander JPJ by saying no action was taken (against me). I did make a mistake but have rectified it,” she tweeted yesterday.

Pictures of her Volkswagen vehicle were shared by X user @Malaysia24x, who did not make clear if they were old images.

Here are JPJ’s vehicle registration rules:

•  White letters and numbers are affixed or bounced over a black frame.

•  White letters and numbers are affixed or embossed over red frames for embassy vehicles, United Nations and the International Natural Rubber Association.

•  Black letters and numbers are bounced over white frame for a taxi or rental car. – February 25, 2024
