SANDAKAN – Putrajaya and the Sabah government have not taken any solid action to resolve poverty issues in Kudat, according to Warisan president Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal.
He said the authorities should be alarmed over the fact that the Kudat federal constituency houses two of the top ten poorest districts in Malaysia, which are Kota Marudu and Pitas.
“Until today, we don’t have a solid plan at the federal level and at the state level to overcome this problem (poverty). The government needs to come up with a framework of a plan.
“This is not only about poverty but also basic infrastructure,” he told reporters at a Chinese New Year event in Kudat, today.
Besides basic infrastructure issues such as water and electricity supply shortages, residents there are also dealing with bad road conditions and a lack of healthcare facilities.
Kudat is about 180 km, or a two-hour drive, away from Kota Kinabalu.
Shafie said there are now only public hospitals with cardiology units in Sabah, and places like Kudos, Semporna, Lahad Datu and Tawau still have no such services. – February 21, 2024
