Taib still recuperating, viral hospital photo not of him, says Raghad

Wife of ex-Sarawak governor wants blogs, media to remove stories using image in question

KUALA LUMPUR – Toh Puan Raghad Kurdi Taib, wife of former Sarawak governor Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud, has said her husband is still recuperating in hospital and is not the man in an image showing him in critical condition.

In a post on her Instagram Stories today, Raghad said the photo was not of Taib, who she said was still warded in a hospital here.

“(Taib) is still recuperating and we are receiving the proper treatment at the hospital where he is currently residing in Kuala Lumpur. Please keep us in your prayers,” she said.

She also requested for all blogs and media portals to remove stories that used the image in question so as to protect the individual in the photo and Taib’s privacy.

Raghad said this after various social media accounts shared a picture of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim visiting an individual in hospital, claimed to be Taib.

It was later clarified that the photo was of Anwar visiting blogger Hussein Abdul Hamid before the latter’s death on February 15 due to stroke complications.

Last week, Raghad said she lodged a police report over claims that she had “absconded” her husband out of a private hospital in Sarawak against doctors’ advice.

This came after a staff member in the hospital filed a report on February 4 alleging that Raghad had removed her husband “despite being advised to have the patient stay in the hospital for proper and adequate treatment”.

Responding to the claims, she said the accusations were “demonstrably false and deeply concerning”, adding that the doctor in charge had cleared Taib’s discharge on February 3 after being informed of his scheduled appointment at the Cardiac Vascular Sentral Kuala Lumpur.

Earlier this month, the Syrian-born Raghad had also called for a stop to speculation and accusations against her, stating that her only concern was to care for her husband, who was replaced as Sarawak governor on January 26, about a month before the end of his term. – February 20, 2024
