KUALA LUMPUR – The Fire and Rescue Department’s forensics unit today deployed its K9 unit (dog team) and several drones to help identify the cause of the fire that ravaged five residences at Sri Sabah Flats late yesterday evening.

Around 11am today, a team comprising two officers, six fire investigation unit personnel, and two K9 detection dogs named Jim and Woody arrived at the scene.

Three drones were also brought to the location, expected to assist in monitoring the site and facilitating the investigation.

Accompanied by a group of police officers, they ascended to the 17th floor, where the fire occurred, securing the affected level.

Earlier, the Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department confirmed in a statement that the fire last night destroyed five residential units on the 17th floor, Block 70 of Flat Sri Sabah.

One additional residential unit on the same floor was successfully rescued, while the five affected units sustained damage ranging from 85 to 97%.

The Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Operations Centre received a report about the fire at 9.19pm.

The fire was extinguished at 11.22pm, and an ongoing investigation is being conducted to determine the actual cause and the extent of the damage.

Meanwhile, a resident of the 16th floor who identified himself as Nathan, said he was in Taman Mahkota Cheras when he received a startling call from his mother informing him of the incident.

“When my mother called, she was very scared and almost cried before asking what needed to be done because the upper-floor house was on fire.

“I immediately asked her and my sibling to save themselves before they descended using the stairs,” he said.

He added that his 68-year-old mother is facing trauma and is currently staying at their residence while waiting for the fire department to complete its investigation. – February 12, 2024
