Enrique, Jellson flop in 10m individual platform prelims

Malaysian divers face disappointment at World Aquatics Championships in Doha, failing to qualify for semi-finals

KUALA LUMPUR – National divers Enrique Harold and Jellson Jabillin missed qualifying for the semi-finals of the men’s 10m individual platform event after finishing in the 27th and 32nd spots, respectively, in the preliminary round at the World Aquatics Championships in Doha, Qatar, today.

Enrique registered dives of 67.50, 76.80, 52.80, 15.30, 67.20 and 60.80 for a total of 340.40 points at the Hamad Aquatic Centre.

Meanwhile, Jellson produced dives of 58.50, 72.00, 57.40, 10.80, 67.20 and 52.50 for a total of 318.10 points.

Cao Yuan and Yang Hao from China and Noah Williams from Britain lead the field into the semi-finals tomorrow.

This failure continues the trend of shocking results from the national diving camp at this world championships to qualify for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris in July.

On Sunday, diving queen Datuk Pandelela Rinong failed to qualify for the semi-finals of the women’s 10m individual platform event after finishing in the 29th spot out of 46 divers in the preliminary round.

She then partnered with Nur Dhabitah Sabri in the women’s 10m synchronised platform event, where the pair could only finish 12th, which confirmed Pandelela’s omission from the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Nur Dhabitah partnered with Ng Yan Yee to a ninth-place finish in the women’s 3m synchronised springboard event. The result means the pair could not splash their way to Paris.

However, Nur Dhabitah and Yan Yee had one more chance to make it to the Summer Games in the women’s 3m individual springboard event but both of them flopped after registering a 24th and 38th place finish in the preliminary round.

That confirmed that no female divers will represent the country at the Paris Olympics.

Bertrand Rhodict Lises, who had already booked his spot to Paris in the men’s 10m individual platform event last year, partnered with Enrique in the men’s 10m synchronised platform but could only manage a ninth-place finish, not enough for a spot in the Olympics in July. – February 9, 2024
