PUTRAJAYA – The Home Ministry is currently finalising its decision to procure body cameras to be utilised by police personnel working in the field.

Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said that he had instructed the ministry to expedite the acquisition of these assets after completing the open tender process.

“We are in the concluding stages of the procurement decision. I understand that the tender process took some time, with specifications changing several times.

“I have explicitly directed the procurement committee not to cause any further delays and to expedite the decision-making process after the open process has concluded,” he told a press conference today.

“I hope this matter will be resolved in the near future.”

Earlier, Saifuddin informed Parliament that the full implementation of police body cameras was expected to commence in 2025.

He said that the government allocated a total of RM30 million in 2021 for the police force to acquire body cameras for their daily duties, adding that the total 7,648 body cameras to be fitted on police officers were estimated to cost between RM2,000 and RM2,500 a unit.

The push to deploy the body cameras comes in the wake of several incidents involving misconduct by police officers, including cases of rape, extortion and murder. – January 24, 2024
