New Sarawak governor will be announced in a day or two: PM

Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim says candidate name submitted to YDPA last week for consideration

KUALA LUMPUR – Sarawak will know who its new governor is in a day or two as the name of the candidate has been submitted to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong (YDPA), said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Anwar said a name had been submitted to the Agong last week for consideration as the authority to appoint the Sarawak governor lies with the YDPA.

“The announcement will be made in a day or two,” the prime minister said in a press conference after launching the Wacana Pemikir Global 2024 event at Universiti Malaya today.

Speculation about Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud’s replacement started when a news site reported that Tan Sri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar had resigned as Dewan Negara president.

Anwar added that a meeting will be held tonight among unity government leaders to discuss candidates to replace Wan Junaidi as Senate president as soon as possible.

Taib Mahmud has been Sarawak governor since March 2014. His term is ending in February. – January 22, 2024
