I was overcharged: woman cries foul over RM24 ayam goreng kunyit meal

Others also share dismay over high prices at Langkawi’s Pantai Cenang

KUALA LUMPUR – A woman received a rude shock after she was charged RM24 for a single-person meal that merely included ayam goreng kunyit (turmeric fried chicken), white rice and plain water in Langkawi.

Hada Jais recently shared her dismay via a Facebook post after visiting Pantai Cenang on the resort island. She stopped at a local stall for a meal and was infuriated by the exorbitant price tag for the local dish.

Accompanying her post was a picture of the receipt for the meal.

“White rice was priced at RM3, a plate of ayam goreng kunyit for one person at RM20, and a cup of plain water was charged RM1. In total, I paid RM24.

“Before criticising me, I want to clarify that the only reason I’m sharing this is due to my disappointment with the pricing of the dish,” she said.

Angry at being charged such high prices, Hada shared her experience, drawing parallels to the dissatisfaction expressed by tourists visiting the popular island.

“No wonder people who visit Langkawi say everything is expensive. Do you think it’s worth paying such a price?

“I’ve taken a picture of the shop, you can see its location near the Pantai Cenang area. Don’t fall victim just like I did,” she warned.

The viral post in the Langkawi Sana Sini Facebook group garnered various responses, with many people expressing their disbelief at the exorbitant meal price.

“Look at that – the price of chicken,” Sha Sha, a Facebook user, said.

“It must have been an imported chicken, not bred in Langkawi. Pantai Cenang is not what it used to be. People are just waiting to rob you,” commented another user, Alias Kamal.

“I just visited Langkawi. It is true that food prices at Pantai Cenang are so expensive, but it doesn’t make sense. One plate of food could go up to RM20. We are also in the food business; we know what the cost is,” said Shiha Al Bukhary.

“In Langkawi, a plate of ayam goreng kunyit with plain water costs RM24. On the other hand, in Hat Yai, Thailand, one can enjoy a melon bingsu, complete with a smoking presentation, for just RM20,” added another person. – January 15, 2024
