KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will ensure that mobile network service providers comply with the government’s promise not to charge extra fees to access 5G networks.

The agency said it fully supported the commitment, which was announced by Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil yesterday.

“The announcement by (Fahmi) on the matter is in line with the government’s continuous effort to provide access to advanced communication technology that is fair and equitable to all Malaysians.

“MCMC will ensure that each mobile network service provider complies with the stated commitment,” it said in a statement today.

Yesterday, Fahmi said the CEOs of all telecommunication companies informed him they would not impose additional charges for subscribers to access the 5G network.

While the subscribers have options to choose their preferred plans, he said they must have devices that support the network.

Fahmi previously said the government would mull action against the companies that impose additional charges in order to access 5G services.

Meanwhile, MCMC also shared that the 5G network service has reached 80.2% coverage of populated areas as of December 31 last year. – January 11, 2024
