KUALA LUMPUR – It is fake news, says the opposition leader’s office, in response to a viral statement alleging that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong granted an audience to 118 MPs and their statutory declaration (SDs) backing Perikatan Nasional (PN).
A photo of the fake statement made its rounds on WhatsApp and social media platforms.
Apart from claiming support, the fake statement also had PN expressing its gratitude to the Agong for consenting to the opposition’s efforts to “save the country”.
This latest speculation comes on the heels of Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Lokman Noor Adam debunking contentious claims of the opposition having 120 SDs after the so-called Langkah Dubai to topple the administration of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Langkah Dubai is a purported gathering of opposition figures and government leaders in the United Arab Emirates last month to identify government MPs who could be persuaded to switch sides.
Such remarks about the collapse of Anwar’s government have circulated now and then since it was formed after the general election in November 2022.
However, on December 30, Community Communications Department deputy director Datuk Ismail Yusop became the first government officer to talk about Langkah Dubai in a public social media post, claiming opposition MPs and some government lawmakers were orchestrating a plot to bring down the unity government. – January 6, 2024
