Norza decides to stay on as BAM president, for now

He said the current focus is the 2024 Paris Olympics, anything beyond that is undecided

KUALA LUMPUR – Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) president Tan Sri Mohamad Norza Zakaria today confirmed that he will be staying on until the Paris Olympics next year.

He told reporters at the Akademi Badminton Malaysia (ABM) today that the current focus is on the 2024 Paris Olympics.

“At the moment, the council does not want me to specify when my tenure will end.

“As you know, my tenure is until 2025, so we will leave it as it is.

“Because when you make an announcement, things will get out of focus about our core business.

“I want the focus to be on the high performance of the sport and not the politics of it.

“We will keep the succession plan on hold for the moment until it is suitable to discuss it again,” he said at a press conference after BAM’s Fourth Council Meeting for the year 2023.

Previously, Norza had announced the Investment, Trade, and Industry Ministry Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz as his successor.

Norza said he has spoken to Zafrul about the matter, and that the senator understands the current situation.

“He (Zafrul) also feels that BAM should be handed to him when the time is right.

“We will still go through the process of discussion, but again, our focus at the moment is the Paris Olympics.

“Any discussions pertaining to this, we will suspend it for a while,” he added. – December 16, 2023
