KUALA LUMPUR – Despite going through a tough schedule this season, national mixed doubles shuttler Toh Ee Wei defied the physical toll of an arduous season to propel her partner, Chen Tang Jie, into the top 10 of the world rankings.
The dynamic duo’s journey, which started in November last year, saw them navigate an exhaustive schedule, participating in 22 World Tour tournaments since January.
Their hard work paid off as it earned them a coveted spot at the upcoming World Tour Finals in Hangzhou, China.
However, national mixed doubles coach Nova Widianto said that this has taken a toll on Ee Wei’s physical well-being as this is the first time the pair have played four to five back-to-back tournaments, a new experience for the pair.
Despite occasional setbacks in Ee Wei’s condition, Nova prioritised injury prevention, carefully managing her training regimen to accommodate her health concerns.

“Sometimes Ee Wei’s condition is not good but she is a tough cookie and has endured it.
“When in training I need to take it easy with her because she was sick previously,” said the two-time world champion who started his duty at Akademi Badminton Malaysia (ABM) in January.
Ee Wei, recounting her performance, attributed her sustained success to dedicated rehabilitation efforts throughout the year.
“I have done a lot of rehab this year to strengthen my body. I’m happy with (the process) because I have been able to last for this whole season,” she remarked.

Early Olympic qualification to ease tournament load
Meanwhile, ABM coaching director Rexy Mainaky highlighted the need for the duo to secure Olympic qualification early to alleviate their tournament load in the upcoming season.
While acknowledging Ee Wei’s commendable fighting spirit, Rexy pointed out that physical challenges and the demanding tournament schedule had hindered their progress.

“The gruelling schedule has impacted Ee Wei’s physical condition, but the good thing with her is that she is aware of it.
“Hopefully until the All England (in March), we can get them into the top eight so their Olympics spot is safe.
“Then we can manage the amount of tournaments she and Tang Jie play so we can give them more time to recover and prepare for competitions next season,” said Rexy.
Tang Jie and Ee Wei will make their first appearance at the World Tour Finals.
Accompanying them are the nation’s top men’s doubles pair, Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik. – December 9, 2023
