KUALA LUMPUR – All Umno parliamentarians and state assembly members are committed to upholding the party’s endorsement of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as prime minister.

Umno secretary-general Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki confirmed this unanimous decision following the party’s supreme council meeting last night.

“As we mark the one-year anniversary of the unity government, the supreme council has reasserted the party’s commitment to strengthen and uphold the unity government as mandated by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

“The meeting also reaffirmed that all Umno MPs and assemblymen will continue to lend their support to Anwar’s leadership as prime minister of the unity government.

“This decision, initially made by the Umno Supreme Council on November 24, 2022, was unanimously endorsed by the party’s general assembly delegates on January 14,” he said in a statement.

He said Umno will further solidify the foundation of collaboration with the coalition of parties in the unity government through the signed agreement.

“This primarily involves upholding the position of Islam as the federal religion, safeguarding the sovereignty of the Institution of Malay kings, preserving the special status of Malays and Bumiputeras, and maintaining the Malay language as the official language.

“To foster greater understanding and collaboration among coalition parties, the supreme council has also decided to organise a unity government convention at the state level starting next month,” he added.

Additionally, Asyraf said that Umno plans to host a special colloquium in conjunction with the Bumiputera Economic Congress, where new economic directions and opportunities for Malays in the country will be presented on January 6.

He highlighted that the congress aims to ensure the continuous empowerment of the Malay agenda. – December 7, 2023
