KUALA LUMPUR – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s possible move to defer the announcement of a looming cabinet reshuffle is likely a strategic decision, as he awaits the most opportune moment to make new appointments, analysts said.

Universiti Malaya (UM) sociopolitical analyst Awang Azman Awang Pawi suggested that the reshuffle would be more likely next year, after the installation of the 17th Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
He said that such a move would demonstrate the unity government’s leadership aligning with the spirit of cooperation with the royal institution, resulting in a positive impact.
“The prime minister’s decision to delay the reshuffle announcement may be linked to the change in Agong,” Awang Azman told Scoop.
“Speculations about promotions and changes in the political landscape are common, but it is crucial to respect the prime minister’s right to determine suitable candidates.”

The installation of the Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar, is slated to take place on January 31, 2024.
On Friday, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, in response to a question from a 12-year-old child, humorously hinted that the unity government cabinet reshuffle might occur before the end of the year.
However, experts such as National Council of Professors senior fellow Datuk Jeniri Amir, believes that it was more appropriate to obtain the approval of the incoming Agong, given the timing.
Jeniri also stressed the need for patience among all parties, suggesting that the reshuffle should not only address vacancies but also involve the removal of ministers and deputy ministers who are ineffective.
He advocates for the selection of candidates based on their experience, potential, and capabilities, even considering the inclusion of technocrats or professionals from outside the political scene.

“The priority is to establish a stable, functional cabinet that aligns with the aspirations of the people and addresses their concerns, including health and the cost of living,” Jeniri said
Jeniri also highlighted the importance of prioritising effectiveness over party affiliation when filling the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living portfolio.
He added that it was crucial for the unity government to have a minister and cabinet actively dedicated to fulfilling promises and supporting the administration’s objectives.
While speculations circulated about an imminent reshuffle, with reports suggesting it could happen after the Kemaman by-election, Jeniri said that due consideration on the timing was needed for a comprehensive and effective cabinet transformation. – December 3, 2023
