Claustrophobe’s nightmare: two women seek medical attention after crowded lift stalls

They were among 18 victims stranded in hour-long ordeal in Melaka

KUALA LUMPUR – Two women, who were among the 18 victims trapped in a malfunctioning lift at a hotel in Jalan Merdeka, Bandar Hilir, Melaka, have been sent for medical attention.

According to the Melaka Tengah Fire and Rescue Department’s Omar Husein@Mohsin, the two women experienced breathing difficulties during their ordeal in the lift. 

The lift stalled between levels 21 and 22, with all 18 victims stranded for approximately 20 minutes before managing to alert the department.

Upon receiving the distress call at 10.12am, a team of seven, including Emergency Medical Rescue Services personnel, was swiftly deployed to the scene. 

They arrived at 10.20am and commenced rescue operations at 10.30am. 

The lift door was successfully opened at 10.34am, concluding the operation by 11.05am.

“The two women, who fainted during the incident, were promptly sent for medical attention to receive further assistance upon their rescue,” said Omar.

He also confirmed that there were no other casualties in the incident. – November 25, 2023
