KUALA LUMPUR – Local artists in Selangor can now breathe a sigh of relief, thanks to the state government’s proposal to provide exemptions and reductions for various entertainment duties.

While tabling Selangor’s 2024 budget, Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said that this move aligns with the federal government’s introduction of duty-related measures in the federal Supply Bill 2024. These incentives are designed to support and promote the local entertainment industry.

He said the incentives include the full exemption of entertainment duties for ticketed stage shows by local artists, which was implemented in 2022.

The state government will also continue the reduction of entertainment duty rates from 25% to 10% for ticketed stage performances by international artists, while rates for performances involving both local and international acts will be set at 8%.

Meanwhile, unticketed live music and band performances will be fully exempted from entertainment duties, he added.

Amirudin said currently, the state government does not charge entertainment duties for unticketed busking activities, to provide opportunities and encourage artists to hone their talents and creative potential in the industry.

“To continue supporting the local creative industry, the state government will continue its efforts to exempt entertainment duties to help local artists and boost the tourism industry,” he said.

For Selangor’s Budget 2024, Amirudin has proposed a RM2.53 billion spending plan, of which RM1.33 billion (52.6%) is for operational expenditure and RM1.2 billion (47.4%) is for development expenditure.

Selangor’s budget for 2023 was RM2.45 billion, of which RM1.25 billion was for operational expenditure and RM1.2 billion was for development expenditure. – November 10, 2023
