KUALA LUMPUR – Local banana leaf restaurant Sri Nirwana Maju has been promoted to receive a Michelin Guide Bib Gourmand.

In an announcement today, the Michelin Guide unveiled another 13 food establishments that have earned the Bib Gourmand due to their “good quality meals at a good value,” in anticipation of the 2024 Kuala Lumpur and Penang Michelin Guide.

Besides Sri Nirwana Maju in Bangsar, four other new additions in Kuala Lumpur are Hor Poh Cuisine, Jalan Ipoh Claypot Chicken Rice, Roti by d’Tandoor and Sek Yuen.

in Penang, 18 eateries were added to the rating, namely Ah Boy Koay Teow Th’ng, BM Cathay Pancake, Ghee Lian, Hot Bowl White Curry Mee, My Own Cafe, Penang Road Famous Jin Kor Char Kuey Teow, Siam Road Char Koay Teow and Sister Yao’s Char Koay Kak.

With the new additions, Kuala Lumpur now has a total of 20 Bib Gourmand establishments featuring more than 10 different types of cuisine while Penang has 25 eateries with the recognition, with almost 50% of them being street food stalls.

The Bib Gourmand distinction, symbolised by the “Bibendum” or “Michelin Man”, recognises both restaurants and street food eateries that Michelin inspectors consider to be the best value for money within the selection.

“These newly recognised eateries enrich the local culinary landscape, showcasing the vibrant food scenes in both regions,” said Michelin Guide international director Gwendal Poullennec.

The complete restaurant selection of the 2024 Kuala Lumpur and Penang Michelin Guide will be released on November 17 during an event hosted at the Four Seasons Hotel here.

The event will be followed by a press conference, after which attendees will enjoy a lunch reception with a selection of dishes presented by Michelin Guide-recommended food establishments.

In December last year, the Michelin Guide awarded 32 Malaysian restaurants with the Bib Gourmand while four restaurants were awarded one Michelin Star. – November 8, 2023
