KUALA LUMPUR – Labuan MP Datuk Suhaili Abdul Rahman has become the second Bersatu lawmaker to be suspended from the party, following reports of him backing Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s leadership.

In a statement today, Bersatu secretary-general Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin said that Suhaili, who is also the party’s Labuan and Federal Territories division chief, has been suspended for a six-year period.

Hamzah added that the decision was reached after the Perikatan Nasional (PN) component member’s disciplinary board held a meeting today to investigate allegations of Suhaili violating party rules.

“After a thorough review of all documentary evidence, considering the gravity of the offence, its implications for the party, and a review of the explanatory letter from (Suhaili), the disciplinary board found him to be in violation of Clause 22.1(f) of the Bersatu constitution.”

Suhaili’s suspension, which is effective from today, was conducted under Clause 22.5(c) of the party’s constitution.

Previously, Suhaili said that his decision to support Anwar was due to the various challenges faced by his constituents, including escalating costs of living as well as issues related to water and electricity supply in Labuan.

On November 4, Bersatu suspended the membership of Kuala Kangsar MP Datuk Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid for four years.

Iskandar had cited ongoing complaints from his constituents and the pressing need to address the rising cost of living in his constituency as reasons for his stance. – November 7, 2023
